Travel South Africa Like a Local: The Art of the South African Road Trip

Discover how a fridge, a few kitchen essentials and compact camping gear can turn an ordinary rental car into a more flexible South African road-trip vehicle.

South Africa was made for road tripping.

It’s a country of wide-open landscapes, spectacular national parks, mountain passes, coastal roads and small towns where some of the best experiences happen between the major destinations. For international travellers, hiring a car gives you the freedom to experience far more of the country than you would from a tour bus or a fixed itinerary.

Hiring a car gives you the freedom to explore South Africa at your own pace—seeking out the destinations and experiences that mean most to you. But what if you could turn your rental car into more than just a means of transport? Adding a few simple pieces of equipment can give you even more freedom along the way. It’s how we as locals like to travel, and we want more international visitors to do the same.

That’s the idea behind Bush Kit Rentals.

We provide compact fridges, kitchen equipment, road-trip essentials and camping gear for travellers who already have a rental car but want to experience a little more of South Africa like a South African.

Why South Africans travel with a fridge or cooler

It might seem unusual if you’re visiting from overseas, but travelling with a fridge or cooler in the car is quite normal in South Africa. There’s a practical reason for it.

South Africa has a warm climate, and road trips often involve long days away from towns and restaurants. Having somewhere to keep drinks, snacks and fresh food cold makes life on the road that much easier.

For shorter trips, or journeys where you’ll be stopping regularly to stock up, a cooler is a simple option. Add some ice or ice packs and you have an easy way to keep drinks, fruit, cheese and other smaller items cold while you explore.

For longer road trips, particularly those that include national parks or more remote stays, a 12V camping fridge gives you a little more independence. It plugs directly into your vehicle and keeps food and drinks consistently cold without having to replenish ice along the way.

Either way, it gives you the freedom to stop at a supermarket, farm stall or local market, pick up supplies and take them with you.

It sounds like a small thing, but it changes the way you travel. Instead of every meal needing to be planned around a restaurant or your next destination, you have the freedom to stop somewhere interesting and enjoy what you’ve brought with you.

Sometimes the best table has the best view

The same thinking applies to carrying a few basic kitchen essentials.

South Africa’s national parks, mountains and nature reserves are filled with places where you can stop and spend some time.

In Kruger National Park, for example, there are picnic sites where you can get out of the vehicle during your self-drive safari. Having a kettle, gas cooker and a few kitchen basics means an early morning game drive can include a proper cup of coffee along the way.

In the Drakensberg, it might mean making lunch after a morning walk. Along the coast, it could simply be putting down a picnic blanket and enjoying something you’ve picked up along the road.

You don’t need a fully equipped expedition vehicle to enjoy these experiences. Often, you just need a few useful things in the boot.

Equipment that doesn’t take over your car

This is an important part of how we approach our rental kits.

Bush Kit Rentals comes from our experience with Tread Lite 4x4 Hire, where we’ve spent years working out how to equip compact vehicles for self-drive travel around Southern Africa.

Space matters.

If you’re travelling for two weeks with suitcases, cameras, daypacks and everything else that comes with an international holiday, the last thing you need is bulky camping equipment taking over your rental car.

Our kits are therefore deliberately compact. The idea isn’t to carry everything you could possibly need. It’s to carry the things that genuinely add something to the trip.

For some travellers, that might simply be a fridge. For others, a fridge, kitchen box, chairs and picnic blanket are enough to turn an ordinary rental car into a much more useful road-trip vehicle.

And if you want to spend a few nights camping, a compact tent and sleeping setup can be added without needing to hire a large, fully equipped 4x4.

Start your road trip from Johannesburg

We also want the equipment to be easy to use from the moment you arrive.

For travellers starting their South Africa self-drive holiday from Johannesburg, Bush Kit Rentals can deliver and collect equipment at OR Tambo International Airport.

You can arrange your rental car independently and add the Bush Kit equipment that suits your trip.

There’s no need to arrive in South Africa and spend the first afternoon looking for camping shops, buying equipment or trying to work out what you’ll need. And at the end of the holiday, you don’t have to figure out what to do with everything you’ve bought.

You simply use it for the journey and return it when you’re finished.

A different way to experience South Africa

Bush Kit isn’t about turning every holiday into a camping trip. It’s about giving you a little more independence.

Keep your food and drinks cold. Make coffee somewhere beautiful. Stop for lunch when you find a view you like. Spend a night camping if the opportunity comes up.

South Africa rewards travellers who have the freedom to stop and explore.

Sometimes a few simple things in the back of your rental car are all you need to experience a lot more of it.
